For this blog post I wanted to do something a little
different then finding an ad campaign or something like that. What I chose to
look at was the promo videos that Saturday Night Live sends out for their show
the following Saturday. The one that I chose in particular to talk about was a
couple weeks ago when Paul Rudd was on the show with One Direction. I told you
I had a crush on One Direction and I love SNL, so why not try to incorporate
them as much as I can? Here is the link to the video:
Watching this video, SNL is setting it up in a way that
showcases Paul Rudd, but he is blending in with the other guys too (looking a
little more professional). The colors are dark, and the guys fill up the
screen. I think that the dialogue is what is going to catch the viewer’s
attention the most. With this being a promo video for a comedy show they are
going to use the dialogue to the best of their ability (they are going to make
it funny). At :56 they are now selling their show. You can see that the font is
bold and the “Saturday” is smaller with the “night” and “live” gradually
getting bigger as you read down the page. With the show being set in New York
they are filming, going over a bridge and the font is in white so the words
stick out on the page. The NBC network logo is up in the right corner and after
the time that the show is on. The proximity of the words are close because they
want to make sure you are seeing everything possible. At 1:02 it switched to a
black screen and bright yellow SNL logo on the page. This is reminding the
viewer one last time what they are watching. It is the last thing they see in
the video so they will notice that the most. With the bright yellow writing it
is something that you can’t miss. They framed the logo in the center so that
your eyes are focused on that one thing. They are making the promo video funny
so that the viewer will want to go and watch that episode when it is aired on Saturday.
